The Department of Animal Husbandry Services of The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with Technical Centre for Agriculture and Rural Cooperation (CTA) organised a training on Web 2.0, Social and Professional Networking for Development for their Staffs. "Web 2.0" refers to the second generation of web development and web design, characterized as facilitating communication, information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design and collaboration on the World Wide Web.  Social Media is a Web 2.0 innovation encouraging user-generated content and extending the focus to the users by allowing them to curate others content to share among their networks. Experts in livestock and animal production recently gathered at the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) for the 41st Annual Conference of the Nigerian Society for Animal Production (NSAP) to discuss and chart a way forward in the livestock sub-sector. The theme of the conference was, ‘New Technologies for Enhanced Animal Production in Nigeria. President of NSAP, Professor Chryss Onwuka, said the theme of the conference was guided by the Society’s need to be up-to-date as well as using the recent advances in the field to increase productivity. Professor Onwuka, a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of FUNAAB, regretted that food was disappearing from the tables by the day, adding that the purchasing power was also dwindling in a dollar denominated Nigerian economy. You can hardly say “honeybee” anymore without hearing the reverb “colony collapse disorder.” Back in 2006, American beekeepers began reporting staggering losses, ranging from 30 to 90 percent of their hives. Since then, the alarming phenomenon—in which adult bees disappear, leaving the brood behind to die—has afflicted Europe as well. And honey’s far from the only reason to care. In America alone, the pollinators enable the production of roughly 90 commercial crops, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. Without honeybees, some of the foods we eat, like almonds, could become extinct; the cost of others, such as cherries and avocados, would likely skyrocket.
